Can white noise damage your hearing?

Any sound, regardless of colour, can contribute to hearing damage if it is loud enough and lasts long enough. The relevant measure is decibel level over time, not whether the sound is white, pink or brown noise. Adult occupational hearing-safety guidance generally limits exposure to around 85 decibels for eight hours, with safe duration dropping sharply as volume rises.

Coloured noise played at a normal, comfortable room level for sleep or focus is well under that threshold. The risk comes specifically from devices used at or near maximum volume, placed close to the ear or head, for extended periods.

Does it affect REM sleep?

Some sleep research has raised a more specific concern: that broadband noise played at higher intensity through the night may reduce time spent in REM sleep, a stage linked to memory and emotional processing. Reported effects have been on the order of a meaningfully shorter REM period per night in some study conditions, alongside earlier findings that very loud white noise can fragment sleep by triggering brief arousals.

What this does and does not mean:These findings involved specific intensities and setups, not any use of background sound whatsoever. A quiet, steady mix across the room is a different exposure than a loud machine beside the pillow all night.

Finding a safer volume

  • Aim for a level similar to a quiet shower or a soft conversation, not a level that blocks out normal room sound entirely.
  • Place the source across the room rather than on a nightstand beside your head.
  • Avoid running any device at or near its maximum volume setting.
  • If you cannot comfortably hold a conversation over the mix from a normal distance, it is probably too loud.

Common myths worth correcting

“White noise is always bad for sleep.”

Not supported at typical, moderate room volumes. The concern is specifically about intensity and duration, not the presence of background sound.

“Louder means it works better.”

The opposite is usually true. A quiet, well-placed mix does the masking job without adding sleep-quality or hearing risk.

“Only white noise carries these risks.”

Pink and brown noise are also broadband sound and follow the same volume-based rules—no colour is inherently safer at high intensity.

“Any exposure at any volume is risky.”

Everyday, moderate-level background sound is not the exposure pattern studied in the concerning findings above.

How to use coloured noise without the downside
